HOW YOU MAKE AN IMPACT:

This position will focus on designing a broad range of tooling including progressive dies, molds, fine blank dies, and supporting components.  Design jigs and fixtures for production or experimental use. Study specifications and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and costs of tooling. Support Engineers III-IV on significant projects.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities (additional duties as needed):

Project Implementation & Process

  • Define and document requirements
  • Manage schedules, resources, costs, and budgets
  • Monitor progress through reports and analysis
  • Lead and support teams
  • Execute AR estimates, data analysis, and alternative evaluations
  • Validate and verify tools/designs; conduct reviews and documentation
  • Provide production training; adjust schedules as necessary
  • Coordinate, close, and critique projects

Production Support

  • Identify and prioritize improvement opportunities
  • Analyze alternatives and implement corrective actions
  • Maintain tooling documentation and consult on processes/tooling
  • Conduct ergonomic and safety assessments
  • Perform capacity studies and informal coordination
  • Analyze failures and support trials/experiments

Technical for Division/Product Line

  • Assess risk and recommend new technologies
  • Advise engineering schools on curriculum
  • Suggest process improvements and manufacturing system enhancements
  • Give feedback in design reviews

Communication & Documentation

  • Prepare technical and status reports/articles
  • Deliver presentations and monthly updates
  • Foster open communication, coaching, and guidance for engineers and MECOP
  • Support engineer development, recommend training/hiring, transfer knowledge
  • Coach product design for manufacturing

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • B.S. in Engineering or equivalent discipline.
  • 5 years of experience in Design and background in Build, Blanking and using progressive tooling.
  • Current with die/mold maintenance procedures and practices
  • Conceptual understanding of the design of manufacturing equipment or other machine tools very helpful
  • Solid understanding of mechanical systems and manufacturing processes
  • Performs research and incorporates innovative uses of technology
  • Develops new tooling designs or major design upgrades for various types of tooling
  • Demonstrated mastery of the following:
    • Mathematics:  algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability, calculus
    • Vector Mechanics:  Scalars and vectors, addition of vectors, rectangular components, magnitude of a vector, the product of a scalar and a vector, scalar product of two vectors; vector product of two vectors
    • Thermal Properties of Matter:  Temperature conversion, expansion, heat capacity, thermodynamics, heat transfer
    • Electricity and Magnetism:  Circuits, types of circuit connections, circuit analysis using Kirchoff’s laws, electric fields and electricity, magnetic fields
    • Statics:  Force, rectangular components of a force, moments of force, force couples, forces and couples, Newton’s First Law and Moments, free body diagrams, centers of gravity and centroids, friction
    • Dynamics:  Rectilinear, curvilinear and angular motion; Newton’s second law, energy methods, momentum
    • Strength of Materials:  Stress and strain, axial loading, torsional loading, beam loading, column loading
    • Materials Science and Metallurgy:  Structure of matter, phase diagrams, iron-carbon diagram, heat treatment of steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and aluminum alloys, plastics/polymers, composites
    • Fluid Mechanics:  Fluid properties, fluid statics
  • Understanding of metal stamping, cold forming, prototype tooling.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of CAD Solid modeling in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Pro/E, Inventor)
  • Familiar with Logopress and SAP
  • Demonstrated ability to apply those principles within projects that require calculations to define or determine a solution
  • Ability to identify alternative methods to check and verify solutions
  • Proven ingenuity, craftsmanship, and judgment in applying technical knowledge to tooling design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to present highly technical information to diverse audiences, some without technical knowledge
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

 

Availability:

  • Available to work on site as required by job; eligible for domestic and international travel.

 

At Oregon Tool, we provide a reasonable, good-faith estimate of the compensation range for this role of $90,000 to $104,000. Final offers are based on various factors such as experience, skills, qualifications and internal equity. This range may vary based on geographic location where the position is filled, and most new hires are not typically hired at the top of the range.
