HOW YOU MAKE AN IMPACT: 
The Product Design Engineer performs complex designs, component, and concept development as well as maintains existing products, with minimal oversight.  A key responsibility is leading development of manufacturing or assembly processes to ensure that design and product can be reliably manufactured at cost target.  This position is accountable for making recommendations on new technologies, identifying areas of opportunity for new products based on market direction and customer needs and participating in cross-functional strategy and direction.  This role also coordinates all technical elements and leads technical communication within project teams.
  
THE DETAILS: 
Product Design Activities (75%) 

  • Facilitate and lead ideation and concept generation; lead concept selection and alternative analysis with ability to persuade others to adopt or approve
  • Develop architecture/concepts for designs and large/ complex assemblies; develop standard drawing templates; apply new technologies to prototypes
  • Apply advanced understanding/experience in manufacturing processes to create a design robust to manufacturing that complies with Oregon Tool’s quality system
  • Lead and contribute to large scale projects, such as technical investigations, technical solutions, manufacturing studies, etc.
  • Negotiate existing or develop complex new product specifications with stakeholders
  • Develop new and complex product testing methods and plans
  • Responsible for meeting all design parameters, including schedule, cost and performance
  • Perform statistical and 3D tolerance studies
  • Facilitate and lead the following analyses:  product failure, hazards, statistical, root cause, risk, and competitive product
  • Facilitate, lead and provide critical feedback in design reviews
  • Provide direct support of engineer-defined or -led product, research, and testing projects
  • Prepare documentation necessary to solicit project funding and business case to explain technical recommendations
  • May provide informal guidance and support to more junior Team Members
  • Contribute to advancing quality system to support product and process development using knowledge of tools, such as Lean, Six Sigma, House of Quality, design of experiments, etc.)

Manufacturing Engineering Activities (25%)

  • Support existing product lines
  • Develops proficiency in a range of processes or procedures through job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience
  • Works within defined processes and procedures or methodologies and may help determine the appropriate approach for new assignments
  • Completes work with a limited degree of supervision
  • Provides solutions to problems in situations that are atypical or infrequently occurring based on existing precedents or procedures.  
  • Works on manufacturing process problems dealing with production equipment problems, low efficiencies, quality, and safety issues
  • Develops standard cost by operation
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement, creates and implements corrective actions to production issues
  • Interprets product, gauging, tooling, and production fixture prints
  • Obtain and maintain basic tools and gauges needed for the department
  • Work instruction and drawing creation
  • BOM/route maintenance
  • Project management - prepare project scope document and timelines, manage changes against project schedule, scope, and cost.


QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:  

  • B.S. in Engineering or equivalent discipline - Design, Industrial or Mechanical preferred
  • 5 + years experience including demonstrated proficiency using SolidWorks; must be able to create 3D models of designs and create 2D drawings to acceptable
  • Familiar with Sheetmetal design and fabrication preferred to include developing design concepts and assemblies 
  • Proficient in applying fundamentals of geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience with low volume/high mix manufacturing, inline testing, and related fixturing
  • Experience in product development is a plus
  • Solid skills in translating customer needs to product specifications
  • Applies relevant standards for industry and product safety and compliance
  • Solid understanding/experience in manufacturing processes to ensure designs are robust to manufacturing 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to express oneself clearly
  • Collaborative and effective team player and able to work with teams who are globally dispersed
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and data management software (SAP preferred)
  • Available to work on site as required by job; eligible for domestic and international travel several times per year up to two weeks’ duration.

The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Oregon Tool, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $82,000 to $90,000.
